The National Union for Tunisian Women (UNFT)

The National Union for Tunisian Women (UNFT) is one of the oldest feminist organizations in Tunisia. Founded in 1956 on the eve of independence, the UNFT has since devoted itself to improving the status of women and eliminating all discrimination and violence against them.

The UNFT aims to:

  • Ensure the promotion of women in all fields: economic, social, cultural, scientific;
  • Act in favor of an increased involvement of women in power centers and decision-making spaces;
  • Develop programs aimed at strengthening the involvement of women in development;
  • Consolidate the education of women by combating illiteracy and the causes of school dropout;
  • Train young girls who have dropped out of schooling in UNFT vocational training centers;
  • Facilitate women's access to new information and communication technologies;
  • Advocate for the eradication of poverty, the creation of sources of income for women and offer support to families in precarious situations;
  • Act in the interests of world peace.

The UNFT and UNFPA are longstanding partners. Since 2017, the two organizations have been working together to promote gender equality and the rights of women in urban and rural areas, in particular through advocacy for the adoption and implementation of Law 2017-58, on the elimination of violence against women. Today, the UNFT and UNFPA are working together to offer a multi-sectoral care to women victims of violence, through the rehabilitation of the August 13 shelter for women victims of violence. Thus, since the start of 2021, 169 women victims of violence or in vulnerable situations have benefited from the services offered by the shelter.
